Stacpoole Family History

Stacpoole Family Coat of Arms

The family has been in Ireland since the Twelfth Century but derives its name from the lordship of Stacpoole or Stackpole in Pembrokeshire. The Irish records from the Twelfth to the Sixteenth Centuries contain many references to Stacpooles in Cos. Cork, Dublin and Limerick. The Black Book of Limerick records that Gerald and Anastasia Stakepol were seated at Rossagh in Kenry, Co. Limerick in 1290 and were succeeded by Richard and Lucy Stakepol in 1299. Richard Stakepoll was chosen as Bishop of Limerick in 1486 but died in Rome before his consecration. The following Stacpooles were Provosts of Limerick: Maurice in 1492, Philip in 1500, Robert in 1513 and John in 1555. In addition Thomas was Bailiff of Limerick in 1559. The relationships of the early branches of the family are far from clear and, though there is no proof, it seems possible that there were two brothers who may have been sons of the John or Thomas Stacpoole mentioned above:

Limerick to Co. Clare but was named as an ‘innocent papist’ in Act of Sett and granted a capital seat of £2,000 per year, admitted to the Middle Temple on 12 May 1638, b. 1619, m. 1stly Mary, dau of Dr. Thomas Arthur and had issue:
        1. James, admitted to the Middle Temple on 25 Oct 1662, b. 1643, d.s.p. 1692.
        2. Arthur, who d.s.p.
        3. Christian, b. 1645, m. Edmund Walsh of Corrubane and Carrigtogher, Co. Tipperary.
        4. Dymphna, b. 1647, m. Colonel Edmond Sexton Pery, who subsequently inherited Stackpole Court and d. 1721 having had issue. See EARL of LIMERICK – Burke’s Peerage.

WILLIAM STACPOOLE of Annagh, Co. Clare, m. ELINOR, dau of Major JAMES FOSTER of Rathorpe, Hollywood and Clooneen, Co. Galway and his wife ELINOR, dau of Colonel GERALD BURKE of Tyaquin Castle. James Foster’s mother was Mary, dau of Sir James O’Donnellan, Lord Chief Justice of Connaught in 1637. He d. 1744 and she d. 1748 and was buried at Ennis having had issue:

  1. William, possibly an attorney-at-law in the Court of the Exchequer in 1734, d. unmarried.

Clare and his wife MARY FINUCANE, sister of The Hon. Matthias Finucane, one of the Judges of the Common Pleas in Ireland. He d. 1812 in Cheltenham and she d.
