Gale Family History

There is an outline pedigree of the Gale family in the Visitation of Yorkshire 1563. The blazon of the Arms is: ‘Azure, on a fess between three saltires or, three lion’s heads erased, gules’. There is also a good pedigree of the Jamaican branch of the Gale family in the College of Arms, signed by William Gale and dated 17 Feb 1783.

OLIVER GALE of Thrintoft, near Scruton, North Yorkshire, son of JAMES GALE of Thrintoft, who was living in 1523, m. ELLEN MARSHALL of Richmondshire and had issue:

  1. James, merchant, of York, who married and lived for a period in Spain. According to the Visitation of Yorkshire, he had no issue, but other sources disagree.
  2. GEORGE, of whom presently.

GEORGE GALE, purchased a reversion of the lease on Acomb Grange in 1552/53, M.P. for York 1533, Lord Mayor of York 1534 and 1549, Treasurer of the King’s Mint, m. MARY, dau of ROBERT LORD of Kendal House, Driffield, East Yorkshire. He d. 7 Jul 1556 and was buried in York Minster and she d. 1557 having had issue:

  6. Ursula, m. Sir William Mallory, second son of William Mallory of Howton, Yorkshire. He was buried at Ripon on 22 Mar 1602/03 having had issue.
  7. Dorothy, m. 1stly John Rokeby of Kirk Sandall. She m. 2ndly Thomas, son of Sir Thomas Fairfax of Denton. She d. 20 Jan 1595/96 and he d. 28 Jan 1599/1600 having had issue: 5 sons and 2 daus.
  8. Elizabeth, m. Robert Garbary of Beverley, East Yorkshire, who d. 1560 having had issue: 1 son and 6 daus.
  9. Thomasin, d.s.p.

FRANCIS GALE of Acomb Grange, Treasurer of the Royal Mint, b. 1525/26, m. ANNE, widow of William Thwaite of Lund and dau of WILLIAM CLAPHAM of Beamsley in Craven, Yorkshire. He d. 28 Nov 1561 having had issue:

ROBERT GALE of Acomb Grange, fought in the Civil War, Acomb Grange estate sold by the Treason Committee of the Commonwealth in 1652, leased back by the family in 1659 and then resold in 1663/4 to the Marwood family of Little Busby, b. c. 1603, m. c. 1625, ELIZABETH, bapt 12 Jul 1601 at Everingham, dau of WILLIAM LANGDALE and his wife ELIZABETH (née CONSTABLE) and had issue:

JOHN GALE, of the Cashew in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, b. Dec 1637, ‘went when a youth to the Island of Jamaica at the first conquest by Penn and Venables A.D. 1655’, patented 533 acres at Wel Savanna in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica on 28 Apr 1673, Major in the Militia, m. MARY JACKSON, who was b. 24 Dec 1647. Matthew Gregory Lewis, the well-known author of The Monk, stayed at the Cashew on 4 Mar 1816 prior to climbing the Bogr. He d. 9 Oct 1689, aged 52, and she d. 10 Apr 1711, aged 64, and they were both buried in the garden at the Cashew having had issue:

  2. John, b. 11 Nov 1668, d. unmarried 8 Apr 1690 and was buried in the garden at the Cashew.

William, F.S.A, of York in the parish of St. James, Member of the Assembly for Hanover 1754-55, Member of the Assembly for St. James 1755-56, b. 15 Jul 1728 at Liguanea in the parish of St. Andrew, m. 11 Jan 1753 at Vere, his first cousin, Elizabeth, dau of John Morant the younger of Withywood in the parish of Vere.       4. Jonathan, b. 19 May 1731, m. 20 Jun 1751 at Vere, Grace, widow of Thomas Gardner of the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica and dau of John Pusey of Vere. She was b. 27 Oct 1732 at Spanish Town, Jamaica and he d.s.p. 30 Apr 1756 and was buried at Vere. See monumental inscription.
      5. Elizabeth, b. 12 Jul 1727 at Kingston, Jamaica, m. 1stly 15 Apr 1750 at Vere, Thomas Parsons of Carlisle in the parish of Vere. She m. 2ndly Daniel McGilchrist and d.s.p. 30 Apr 1761 and was buried at Vere.
      6. Mary, b. 19 Nov 1729 at Liguanea, m. William Lewis and d.s.p. circa 1773.
      7. Gibbons, b. 14 Sep 1732 at Liguanea, d. unmarried 4 Jul 1761 and was buried at Vere.

      9. Margery, b. 19 Nov 1735 at Withywood, d. unmarried 5 Nov 1759 and was buried at Vere.
      He m. 2ndly 24 Nov 1742 at the house of Samuel Dicker, Sarah, dau of Daniel Curtis of the parish of St. Thomas. He d. 27 Feb 1749/50, aged 52, and was buried at Vere (see monumental inscription) and she d.s.p. 1773.
    2. Mary, b. 17 Apr 1696 at the Cashew, d. 17 Jul 1698 and was buried in the garden at the Cashew.
    He m. 2ndly 14 Sep 1699 at Spanish Town, Jane, dau of William Gallimore of the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica. She was b. 12 Jan 1681/82, d. 28 Aug 1702 and was buried in the garden at the Cashew having had issue:

He d. circa 1750 (P.C.C. will dated 1 Mar 1746/47and proved 1 Aug 1750) and she d. 8 May 1750 (P.C.C. will dated 7 May 1750 and proved 1 Aug 1750) and was buried at Luana having had issue:

His great-grandfather John Vassall was the builder and owner of the Mayflower in which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed to America in 1620. She d. 14 Mar 1733/34 at Boston, Massachusetts (and he m. 2ndly Phoebe Penhallow) and he d. 20 Jun 1737 having had issue.

Colonel JONATHAN GALE of Fullerswood in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Colonel and Custos of the parish of St. Elizabeth, Member of the Assembly for St. Elizabeth 1708-09 and 1711, Member of the Assembly for Westmoreland 1721-22 and 1725-26, b. 10 Mar 1675/76, m. 18 May 1699 at Vere, ELEANOR – . She was buried at St. Elizabeth on 16 Oct 1725 and he d. 21 Apr 1727 and was buried at St. Elizabeth on 28 Apr 1727 (Black River Church) having had issue:

JAMES GALE, owned 150 acres in the parish of Hanover, 900 acres in the parish of Westmoreland and 300 acres in the parish of St. Elizabeth in 1754 m. ELIZABETH – . She was buried at Westmoreland on 6 Mar 1745/56 and he was buried at Westmoreland on 3 Jul 1746 having had issue:

  1. James, buried at Westmoreland on 7 Jul 1747.
  2. ELIZABETH, of whom presently.
  3. Eleanor, bapt 3 Jan 1741/42 at Westmoreland, m. her first cousin, James, son of Colonel Robert Phillips and his wife Eleanor, dau of Jonathan Gale (see above).

ELIZABETH GALE m. 4 Jan 1753 at Westmoreland, BERNARD SENIOR of the parish of Westmoreland, younger son of BERNARD SENIOR of the parish of Westmoreland and his wife MARGARET (née DORRILL). See Senior Family History. She d. on Rhode Island and was buried at Westmoreland on 7 Nov 1764 and he d. 10 Jan 1766 and was buried at Westmoreland on 12 Jan 1766 having had issue.
