Introduction

Looking through the various family histories, I thought that it would be interesting to extract the names of those who had laid down their lives ‘for King and Country’. In the event the chronological list below encompasses most of the major campaigns in which the forces of the Crown have been involved over a period of three hundred years. It should be noted that some of those listed are related by marriage, not blood.


Joseph Husey, Captain in Colonel Phelip’s Regiment in the King’s Army in the English Civil War, killed in a skirmish with the forces of the Earl of Bedford at Babell Hill between Sherborne and Yeovil on 13 Sep 1642.

Captain George Campbell, Grenadier Guards, killed at the Battle of Dettingen on 16 Jun 1743.

Robert Husey, Captain in Major General James Wolfe’s expedition, d. 1759 at Quebec.

Captain George Stacpoole, Royal Artillery, d. 1796 on a prison ship in the West Indies.

Lieutenant Colonel John Scrope Colquitt, Grenadier Guards, badly wounded at Barrosa on 5 Mar 1811 and d. 5 Sep 1812 in Seville of fever after ‘great exertions and gallantry’ on 27 Aug 1812 at the capture of the bridge at Triana during the battle for Seville.

Lieutenant Edmond Stacpoole, Flag Lieutenant to Rear Admiral John Erskine Douglas, Commander-in-Chief, on H.M.S. Salisbury, d. of disease in Jamaica early in 1816.

Captain William Allan, 34th Madras Native Infantry, killed in action at Kaiklu, near Rangoon, Burma on 7 Oct 1824.

Lieutenant Franklin Knight Kirby, 93rd Highlanders, died of typhus in the Crimea on 16 Feb 1855, aged 19.

Commander Lacon Ussher Hammet, R.N., H.M.S. Albion, killed in the trenches before Sebastopol on 17 Aug 1855 while commanding the batteries of the Right Attack of the Naval Brigade.

Captain Maximilian Montagu Hammond, 2nd Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, killed in the assault on the Redan, Sebastopol on 8 Sep 1855.

Lieutenant Colonel Gilbert Nicholetts, 2nd Baluch Regiment, d. 18 Jul 1879 of cholera at Kokaran, Afghanistan while commanding his Regiment during the Second Afghan War.

Charles Richard Alfred Toller, B.A., d. 7 Jun 1900 of wounds received at Heilbron while serving with the Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War.

Corporal Charles Cecil Whitlock, Royal Army Medical Corps, d. 14 Mar 1901 of enteric at Norval’s Pont, Northern Cape.

Major William Louis Campbell Allan, M.A., 3rd Battalion, The King’s Own Scottish Borderers, killed in action at Cuinchy, La Bassée, near Béthune, France, while serving with 2nd Battalion, The King’s Own Scottish Borderers, during the Battle of the Aisne on 12 Oct 1914 and buried at Brown’s Road, Military Cemetery, Festubert.

Lieutenant Ronald Mortimer Slater, 1st Battalion, The Worcestershire Regiment, died of wounds in France on 21 Nov 1914 and buried in Merville Communal Cemetery.

Lieutenant George Eric Guy Stacpoole, 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, killed in action in Belgium on 30 Jan 1915 and buried in Dickebusch Old Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

Captain Edward Armfield Marrow, 3rd Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, killed in action at Y Beach, Gallipoli on 25 Apr 1915 and buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery.

Gunner Reginald Arthur Crooke, D Battery, 62nd Brigade, R.F.A., killed in action during the Battle of Loos on 7 Oct 1915 and buried in St. Mary’s Advanced Dressing Station Cemetery, Haisnes, France.

Captain Harry Thomson Whybrow, Motor Machine Gun Service, killed in action in German East Africa on 21 Mar 1916 and buried in Moshi Cemetery, Tanzania.

Private William John Weatherall, 10th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, died of wounds on 5 May 1916 and was buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery.

2nd Lieutenant Gerard Herbert Elsworth, 62nd Punjabis, killed in action in Mesopotamia on 27 Jun 1916 and buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq.

Captain Ivan Provis Wentworth Bennett, Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, killed in action at Trones Wood during the Battle of the Somme on 13 Jul 1916 and commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Captain Edward Northcote Toller, 20th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, killed in action at High Wood during the Battle of the Somme on 20 Jul 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueville.

Brigadier-General Charles Edward Stewart, C.M.G., Commander, 154th Infantry Brigade, killed in action in France on 14 Sep 1916 and buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentières.

Second Lieutenant Allan George Condi, 5th Battalion, Border Regiment, killed in action in France on 1 Oct 1916 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, France.

Lieutenant George Reginald Toller, M.A., 1st Garrison Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, died of wounds in Mesopotamia on 27 Jul 1917 and buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.

Captain Bentley Moore Hunter, R.A.M.C., attached 1st Battalion, The Cambridgeshire Regiment, killed in action on 31 Jul 1917 and commemorated on the Menin Gate.

Second Lieutenant The Hon. Francis Walter Stafford McLaren, M.P., J.P., R.F.C., killed flying on 30 Aug 1917 and buried at Busbridge, Surrey.

Second Lieutenant Gilbert Leonard Newbery, V.D., Army Service Corps, killed in action in Belgium on 12 Nov 1917 and buried in the Menin South Military Cemetery.

Major Gustav Frederick Wolff, Royal Welch Fusiliers (attached to the Machine Gun Corps), killed in action in France on 21 Mar 1918 and buried in Red Cross Corner Cemetery, Beugny.

Brigadier-General Ralph Hamer Husey, D.S.O. and bar, M.C., Commander, 25th Infantry Brigade, died on 30 May 1918 of wounds received action in France three days earlier and buried in Vendresse British Cemetery, just below the Chemin des Dames.

Air Mechanic (2nd Class) Hugh McDonald, School of Technical Training, Royal Air Force, d. 30 May 1918 and buried in Sandymount Cemetery, Glasgow.

Second Lieutenant Frederick Herbert Archibald Weale, 57th Squadron, R.A.F., killed in action in France on 2 Oct 1918 and buried in Marcoing Cemetery.

Lieutenant Vere Cyril Wentworth Bennett, R.G.A., The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, d. of pneumonia in Italy on 13 Oct 1918.

Corporal Lionel Innes Montel Toller, 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), Royal Armoured Corps, d. 10 May 1940 in a vehicle accident and buried in Worksop (Retford Road) Cemetery.

Flight Lieutenant Humfrey Ewan Symons, R.A.F., missing in action when the Belgian vessel Aboukir was torpedoed by an E-boat on 28 May 1940 while sailing from Ostend back to England and commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Commander (E) John Michael Goodman, R.N., killed in action while serving on H.M.S. Glorious on 8 Jun 1940 and commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Flying Officer Thomas Dowell Trouncer, B.A., R.A.F.V.R., d. 16 Oct 1940 on war service and buried in Kensal Green (St. Mary’s) Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Surgeon Lieutenant Commander James Oxenham Fielding, R.N., lost when H.M.S. Hood was sunk by the Bismarck on 24 May 1941 and commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Pilot Officer John Douglas Edmund How, R.A.F.V.R., 42nd Squadron, R.A.F., killed in action on 13 Aug 1941 and commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Lance Bombardier Thomas Dent Goodman, 7th/4th Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery, killed in action at sea on 13 Apr 1942 and commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Lance Bombardier Martin Richard Goodman, 83rd Battery, 16 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, d. of disease in the Middle East Theatre on 1 Jun 1942 and buried in Heliopolis War Cemetery, Egypt.

Temporary Acting Lieutenant Noel Julian Cornes, R.N.V.R., killed in action on 9 Jul 1942 while serving on H.M.S. Tern and buried in Kirkwall (St. Olaf’s) Cemetery, Orkney.

Lieutenant General William Henry Ewart Gott, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O. and bar, M.C., Commander-designate, 8th Army, killed on 7 Aug 1942 when the plane in which he was flying was shot down and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.

Captain Joseph Alexander Samuels, British Overseas Airways Corporation, d. 15 Feb 1943 when de Havilland DH95 Flamingo G-AFYE passenger aircraft crashed at Asmara and was buried in Asmara War Cemetery, Eritrea.

Flying Officer Philip Corfield Jackson, R.A.F.V.R, 180th Squadron, R.A.F., killed in action on 13 Jun 1943 and commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Corporal Edwin Norman Buck, 3rd (King’s Own) Hussars, died 29 Nov 1943, aged 43, in Singapore when a prisoner-of-war.

Flight Lieutenant Peter Charles Edwards, R.C.A.F., 77th Squadron, R.A.F., killed in action over Amiens on 15 Mar 1944.

Pilot Officer Russell Wood, R.N.Z.A.F., 44th Squadron, R.A.F., killed in action on 22 Jun 1944 and buried in Nederweert War Cemetery, Holland.

Brigadier Henry Cuthbert Partridge, D.S.O., Royal Fusiliers, killed in an aircraft accident in Italy on 23 Jan 1945 and commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
