Major-General Maitland Cowper

Major-General Mailtand Cowper, colonel of the 4th Duke of Cambridge’s Own Hodson’s Horse since 1916, died yesterday in London at the age of 72.

The son of Captain Cowper, of the Honourable East India company’s service, he entered the Army in 1880, and joined the I.S.C. (now the Indian Army) in 1891. In 1895 he served with the Chitral Relief Force, and was D.A.Q.M.G., Simla, from 1900 to 1905. He was then appointed A.A.G., 2nd (Rawal Pindi) Division, in 1907 commandant of the 10th Duke of Cambridge’s Own Lancers, and in 1912 A.Q.M.G., 7th (Meerut) Division, being made C.I.E. in that year. From 1913 to 1915 he commanded the Allahabad Brigade, and then the 6th (Poona) Divisional Area. In the Great War he served as D.A. and Q.M.G. of the Indian Expeditionary Force D in Mesopotamia, and was mentioned in despatches and made C.B. He was promoted to major-general in 1915, and retired in 1919. He married, in 1899, Cecil Harriette, daughter of Captain J. Y. Allan, late The Highland Light Infantry, and had one son.
