Lee Family History

It seems likely that the family originally came from Lenton, Nottinghamshire where ZACHARIAH, son of JOHN LEES was bapt on 18 Oct 1666. In the light of spelling variations in early Parish Registers, it is reasonable to suggest that the following may be siblings and the children of ZACHARIAH LEES:

  1. ZACHARIAS, of whom presently.
  2. William, framework knitter (operator of a hosiery-making machine), m. 1712 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, Elizabeth Jackson.
  3. Anne, of Lenton, b. circa 1690, m. 6 May 1718 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, Thomas Frost, gentleman, of Radbourne, Derbyshire. Zacharias Lee was one of the bondsmen. He was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 28 Mar 1769 and she was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 19 Mar 1772.
  4. Prisca, m. 21 Jan 1728/29 at Lenton, Thomas Whetley.

ZACHARIAS LEE, sinkermaker (a maker of lead weights used with hosiery knitting machines), of Houndsgate and Castlegate, Nottingham, enrolled as a burgess of Nottingham on 12 Jun 1702, Churchwarden of St. Nicholas, Nottingham in 1722, m. ANN – . She was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 18 Sep 1753 and he was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 24 Apr 1759 (Nottingham will dated 6 Jun 1757 and proved 25 May 1759) having had issue:

Zacharias, sinkermaker, victualler and flaxdresser, of the parish of St. Nicholas, Nottingham, Churchwarden of St. Nicholas, Nottingham 1765/67, b. circa 1715, m. 1stly 8 Jun 1740 at Gedling, Nottinghamshire, Elizabeth Hardy, widow, of St. Peter’s, Nottingham. She was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 13 Oct 1750 having had issue:
    1. Zacharias, bapt 19 May 1748 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 15 Apr 1755.
    2. Catherine, bapt 19 Jan 1749/50 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.
    He m. 2ndly 3 Oct 1751 at Wollaton, Nottinghamshire, Ann Edson. She was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 14 Jun 1761 having had issue:
    1. William, bapt 6 Apr 1755 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 10 Aug 1783.
    2. Zacharias, sinkermaker, enrolled as a burgess of Nottingham on 25 Jul 1777, mentioned in the will of his aunt Prisca, bapt 30 May 1756 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, m. 30 May 1792 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, Lucy Ossingbroke and had issue:
      1. William, bapt 24 Aug 1794 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 24 Jan 1796.
      2. Zacharias, bapt 19 Jan 1800 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 19 Jul 1801.
      3. Zacharias, sinkermaker, of 1 Berkeley Street, Nottingham, bapt 18 Dec 1803 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, m. 27 Jan 1826 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, Jane Rowley. Both of them were living in 1881.
      4. William, bapt 28 Aug 1808 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.
      5. James, bapt 5 Feb 1812 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.

    He m. 3rdly 20 Oct 1761 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, Ann Brown, who was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 22 Jan 1767. He m. 4thly Mary – , who was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 5 Nov 1776. He m. 5thly 29 Dec 1776 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, Elizabeth Smith, widow. He was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, aged 68, on 25 May 1783 (Nottingham will dated 29 Dec 1779 and proved 5 Feb 1785) and she was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, aged 72, on 20 Feb 1788.
  3. Elizabeth, bapt 26 Jun 1704 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, m. 11 Jun 1728 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, Thomas Berkins of Southwell and had issue.
  4. Anne, bapt 29 Jan 1706/07 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, m. 23 Jun 1729 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, William Froggatt, merchant, of Chesterfield, Derbyshire and had issue:
    1. William, who was apprenticed to his uncle Zacharias Lee for £5 in 1755.
  5. Martha, bapt 3 Oct 1710 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, m. 30 Dec 1733 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, William Gunthorpe of the parish of St. Mary’s, Nottingham.
  6. Mary, bapt 23 Jan 1713/14 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, m. 29 Dec 1735 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, George Squire of Draycot, Derbyshire and had issue.
  7. Prisca, bapt 17 May 1717 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, d. unmarried and was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 16 Jun 1805 (Nottingham will dated 18 Jan 1804 and proved 13 Jul 1805).
  8. Easter, bapt May 1719 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.
  9. Ruth, bapt 2 Jun 1721 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.
  10. Sarah, bapt 1 Oct 1722 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, d. unmarried and was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 8 Oct 1781.

WILLIAM LEE, framework knitter, of Nottingham, bapt 6 Nov 1708 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, apprenticed to Arthur Beardsley, framework knitter, of Nottingham in 1722, m. 6 Mar 1730 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, ANNE MARSH, who was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 20 Dec 1763 having had issue:

  1. Richard, bapt 23 Jan 1733/34 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 30 Jun 1736.
  2. William, mentioned in the will of his aunt Prisca, bapt 24 Feb 1746/47 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham.
  3. Elizabeth, bapt 6 Aug 1732 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.
  4. PRISCA, of whom presently.

PRISCA LEE, bapt 3 Mar 1734/35 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, m. 5 Aug 1762 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, THOMAS RAWSON, hosier, of the parish of St. Nicholas, Nottingham, son of WILLIAM RAWSON and his wife ELIZABETH, dau of THOMAS JEKYLL. See RAWSON of SOWERBY – Burke’s Landed Gentry 1972 Edition and JEKYLL – Burke’s Family Records 1897. She d. in childbirth and was buried at St. Nicholas, Nottingham on 24 Oct 1764 and he d. 27 Mar 1801 in Nottingham having had issue (an only son):

THOMAS JEKYLL RAWSON, J.P., hosier, of Nottingham, bapt 25 Oct 1764 at St. Nicholas, Nottingham, m. 14 Sep 1794 at St. Oswald’s, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, SARAH, youngest dau of RICHARD HAYNE, J.P., of Ashbourne Green Hall, Ashbourne and his wife MARY, eldest dau of Rev WILLIAM NEWTON, M.A., of Ashbourne. She d. 16 Aug 1843 and he d. 12 Oct 1843 having had issue. See Jekyll Family History.
