c.       Thomas Henry, carpenter, b. 5 Oct 1913 at Buxton, m. 15 May 1937 at Buxton, Ruby Tryphena Riches, who was b. 11 Sep 1916 at Buxton and has issue: 1 son.

d.      George Ernest, building contractor, b. 26 Nov 1917 at Buxton, m. 10 May 1941 at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, Minnie Marguerite Andrews, who was b. 21 Jan 1921 at Little Gaddesden. He d. 27 Sep 1988 having had issue: 1 son and 1 dau.

He m. 2ndly 25 Nov 1866 at Rockland, his first cousin, Effa, widow of James Carr and eldest dau of Samuel Chilvers and his wife Anne, dau of William Catchpole (see above). He was buried at Rockland on 16 Feb 1890 and she was buried at Rockland, aged 84, on 4 Sep 1906.

 

WILLIAM CATCHPOLE of Ashby and Rockland St. Mary, lost his right arm while out shooting after which he was known as ‘arse-end Catchpole’, b. 24 Jul 1831, bapt 14 Aug 1831 at Rockland, m. 11 Nov 1854 at Rockland, AMELIA, dau of JOSEPH RUDD and his wife MARIA (née SHORTEN). She was buried at Rockland, aged 55, on 7 Dec 1887 and he was buried at Rockland on 13 Jan 1897 having had issue:

c.      Elsie Laura, of Birkenhead, living in 1989, m. Bertram Marston.

d.      Annie Eliza, b. 2 Mar 1905, m. 6 Dec 1930 at Norwich Register Office, George Victor Calton and had issue:

1.       Robert Victor, b. 31 May 1933, m. Margaret O’Halloran but has no issue.

6.       Arthur (‘Rorty’), of Surlingham, b. circa 1866 at Ashby, worked on the wherries between Norwich and Surlingham Ferry, m. Agnes Purdy of Surlingham. He was mentioned in Norfolk Fowler by Alan Savory published in 1953. She d. 1929 and he d. 1941 having had issue:

a.      Lewis, b. circa 1900, m. 1924, Emily Stanton and had issue:

1.       George.

a.      Violet, b. 1894, who d. 1965 having had natural issue: 2 sons and 1 dau.

7.       William, bapt 15 Sep 1867 at Rockland, buried at Rockland on 24 Nov 1867.

8.       Alfred, bapt 6 Nov 1868 at Rockland, buried at Rockland on 15 Apr 1869.

9.       Alfred, b. circa 1870, served in the Royal Artillery in the Boer War 1899-1900, a teamster on a farm at Bramerton, Norfolk in 1901, later a Commissionaire at The London Palladium.

10.     Frederick, bapt 12 Mar 1872 at Rockland, buried at Rockland on 28 Apr 1872.

11.     Frederick, bapt 2 May 1878 at Rockland, changed his name to Rudd and served in the British Army during the Boer War.

Selina had previously had issue: Adelaide Staff, b. circa 1872 and Maria Staff, b. circa 1874.  She d. 18 Feb 1924 at 30 Gordon Road, Norwich and he d. Sep 1938 in Buxton Road, Norwich having had issue:

2.       Albert Edward, worked at the L.N.E.R. railway workshops, of 102 Major Road, Stratford, London, b. 24 Feb 1881 at Rockland, bapt 24 Apr 1881 at Rockland, m. Jane Elizabeth Scott of Brixton. She d. 17 May 1948 and he d. 4 Jul 1956 having had issue:

a.      Albert Joseph, Warrant Officer (Class II), Royal Artillery, of 107 Ecclesbourne Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey, b. 10 Dec 1909, m. Ivy Phillips. He d.s.p. 20 Jan 1964 and she d. 12 May 1989.

b.      Sidney Percy, b. 4 Apr 1911, m. Elsie Ingham and d. 1955 having had issue: 1 son.

c.      Victor Edward, shipping clerk, of 164 Gorseway, Rush Green, Romford, Essex, b. 6 Jul 1919, m. Alice Ennever and has no issue.

a.      Irene Millicent, b. 19 Dec 1912, m. Alfred Williams. She d. 1981 and he d. 1989 having had issue: 2 sons.

b.      Gladys Frances, b. 13 Apr 1914, m. Ernest Roberts. She d. 1969 and he d. 1981 having had issue: 2 daus.

c.      Lena Elizabeth, of 27 Wolverton Avenue, Queen’s Promenade, Blackpool North Shore, Lancashire, b. 3 Sep 1917, m. 9 Sep 1939 at St. John’s, Stratford Broadway, London, Sidney George Mason, butcher, and has issue: 1 son and 1 dau.

3.       Lewis Augustus, worked for J.J. Colman & Co. in Norwich, b. 31 Mar 1882 at Beighton, Norfolk, m. 14 May 1902 at Earlham, Norfolk, Alice Elizabeth, dau of William Cooper of Earlham. He d. 6 Dec 1957 and she d. 14 Jan 1969 having had issue:

a.      Louis Edward Augustus, Major, The North Staffordshire Regiment, b. 4 Jun 1906, enlisted in 2nd Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment in 1922, transferred into The North Staffordshire Regiment in 1936 and retired in 1947, m. 26 Dec 1933, Charlotte Leeder of Melton Constable, Norfolk. She d. 1976 and he d. Feb 1980 having had issue: 1 son and 2 daus.

b.      Ernest William, butcher and hotelier, b. 8 Jul 1913 at Goldwell Road, Norwich, served in The Royal Norfolk Regiment 1940-46, m. 1stly 26 Dec 1933 (marriage dissolved) at Norwich Register Office, Olive Ward and had issue: 2 sons.

He m. 2ndly Feb 1954, Irene Riches and d. 1975 at Leiston.

a.      Marjorie Hilda, b. 5 Nov 1920 at Goldwell Road, Norwich, m. 20 Apr 1940 at St. John the Baptist, Earlham Road, Norwich, Harry John Porrett, electrical engineer, served with The Royal Signals in the Middle East 1940-46, son of Walter William Porrett, fishmonger and fruiterer. He d. 11 Apr 1984 having had issue: 1 son.

4.       Reginald, railway employee, of 13 Brooke Place, Ber Street, Norwich, b. 23 Dec 1887, m. 26 Dec 1914 at Norwich Register Office, Ethel May, dau of John William Rouse of 98 Eade Road, Norwich. She d. 9 Oct 1940 and he d. 30 Sep 1955 having had issue:

a.      Kenneth Reginald, electrical engineer, b. 2 Oct 1915, served in the Royal Army Service Corps with the 8th Army during the Second World War, m. 22 Dec 1939 at Fakenham, Daisy, dau of John Riseborough of Melton Constable and has issue: 1 son.

a.      Mollie Nancy, of 49 Kingsthorpe Grove, Northampton, b. 5 Jun 1920, m. 23 Dec 1944 at St. Edmund’s, Northampton, Leslie Hall, engineer, son of Arthur Hall of Huntingdon. He d. 24 Sep 1987 having had issue: 1 son and 1 dau.
